Art and Math

Great Partners for Kids Learning

Using the imagination and creativity of a group of 4th through 6th grade-aged students, Saturday Academy, a school designed to give kids advantages in their learning of math, science and technology, is featuring a summer class called “Math Artistry” where a variety of artistic activities will be intertwined with such mathematical concepts as rotational symmetry, number bases, pre-algebra, statistics, decimals, geometry and fractions.

Instructor, Alice Cotton, author of a book on architecture, When Buildings Speak, was a classroom teacher for nine years where she developed a highly engaging “Math Art” curriculum for 4 through 7th grade students. Alice was involved in an Action Research Project at a West Linn Elementary School and a Math Learning Center continuing education class for teachers that explored this type of math-art curriculum and its benefits to children.

Home schoolers and public school children are invited to take advantage of this summer opportunity to make math quilts, design tiles for their rooms, learn how it is possible 4+1= 0 using a clock number system, and create colorful art like the famous artist Henri Matisse. Students will also make Math Art design books where their work will be featured.
