Seniors Take It On The
Road for Upcoming Tour
Watch history unfold before your very
eyes. Take this historical bus
ride and visit some of the very first homes built in the northeastern wilderness
in Oregon City, NW Portland, and
Sauvies Island. The bus tour is being sponsored by Clark College’s Mature
Learning Center which is a special
continuing education program with tours and classes for seniors only. Alice Cotton, architectural artist,
teacher, and author of When Buildings Speak, will be leading this bus tour that
begins with the Barlow Mansion, the home of early pioneer William Barlow whose
father built the Barlow Trail. Then on to Oregon City’s
McLoughlin House with a full discussion on the impact John McLoughlin had in
the northwest. Then you’ll visit the beautifully restored Victorian Simon
Benson house near Portland State Univerisity. Did you know that if put to the
test the Benson house can float?
The group will then travel to Savies Island to see the Byee-Howell
house, a prime example of early pioneer Greek Revival homes and discover what they
have in common, if anything, with ancient Greek temples.
Alice
will also be teaching classes in architecture at the Mature Learning Center in
the Fall. Please visit
Alice’s web page www.artemisillustration.com for details or call Clark
College 360-992-2213 to sign up.
